The school, known as Laerskool Kiepersol, was founded on 23 January 1957, with a mere thirty pupils, by Dr. Vorster on the grounds presently occupied by the Hazyview Protea Hotel. The first acting headmaster was Mr W.N. van Wyk, who was followed by Mr D. A. Oosthuizen, officially appointed from January 1959.

Due to a shortage of space and water, the school was moved to the previous terrain, opposite the Numbi Hotel, on 28 July 1959. At that stage the number of pupils had already grown to fifty- two.

At the start of 1962, Mr E. T. Logie was appointed as acting head and was succeeded in 1963 by Mr J. D. Leonard, appointed in a permanent capacity. Subsequently, Mr R. Barnard served as headmaster from 27 July 1965 until the end of 1980, the name of the school having been officially changed to Laerskool Numbi on 14 August 1968. The post was then taken up by Mr J. I. van der Merwe, who served as principal for many years until he retired from service in 2006. Mr A. S. Coetzee, our current principal, was appointed on 8 January 2007.

Since the early years, there has been a gradual increase in our number of pupils. This may be attributed to the rapid development of agriculture in the area. Furthermore, since the eighties Hazyview has also become a sought after tourist attraction, leading to the development of numerous holiday and time share resorts.

From 1990 the school experienced unprecedented growth, and the pupil numbers grew to two hundred and twenty, rendering the then school building totally inadequate. To overcome this problem, the school hall was subsequently sub-divided into two separate classrooms.

There was much celebration in June 1992 when the new and current school grounds were handed over to the building contractor for the erection of a brand new, permanent school for our pupils. Amidst great excitement these new premises were occupied in August 1993.

Today the school boasts 14 departmental teaching posts, three governing body posts, five students, two administrative staff posts and provides for four grounds personnel. We currently have 413 pupils registered at the school.

Overall, our pupils are excelling. On the sports front, their names are frequently amongst those of the leaders in the various leagues. Culturally, they also prove their expertise as shown year by year with their flair for the stage. Old Numbi pupils are frequently elected as head boy or head girl at high school, where many others find themselves elected onto student governing bodies.

As always, it remains the objective of our staff at Numbi, to offer each child the opportunity to develop holistically, in order that he/ she may ultimately serve as a well-balanced citizen of our country, the Republic of South Africa.
